That alone is a sight to behold, but the tunnel and the rock formations around it are well worth a view as well. Only one car at a time can go through, and believe it or not, huge charter buses squeeze through daily, too. If someone is going through the tunnel you need to wait your turn, as there is only enough room for one car at a time. It’s called the Needles Eye Tunnel for a good reason: it is the narrowest tunnel in South Dakota. No trailers or RV’s can go through this tunnel as you are going right through the rock. ![]() DU&P ran out of money before the tunnel could be completed. That tailings pile in the lake is the debris from construction of a railroad tunnel for the Denver, Utah & Pacific Railway. "This is a very interesting one way little tunnel in Custer State Park. The goal of the Needles Eye Tunnel restoration process is to assist in restoring this historic landmark and preserving as much of the original road as possible. We not only saw a huge tour bus get through that tiny tunnel (to applause I might add), when we started to enter there were two mountain goats waiting for their photo opp. Take your time to get on some of the rocks and take pictures.
